This page offers some resources and ideas for finding jobs in environmental education. Residential outdoor education and California is emphasized, but the information should be useful to people seeking other opportunities. Many environmental education jobs are obtained through word of mouth, so it is well worth attending conferences and environmental fairs to meet employers and peers working in the field. Visiting program sites to meet the staff and familiarize yourself with the environment and curriculum can help a great deal in getting a job, and is a good chance to share ideas.

Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (AEOE) Job List & Newsletter lists openings in residential outdoor education in California. Women in Natural Resources (WiNR) offers employment flyers mailed several times a month, which focus on natural resource work, but include environmental education. A quarterly journal is also published. The organization emphasizes natural resource employment and professional growth for women, but men are not prohibited. Cost: $19 per year. Organizations

Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (AEOE). AEOE is an informal professional organization composed of people interested in and working in the field of environmental education throughout the state of California. Most members are naturalists, teachers, and directors at residential outdoor schools, but classroom teachers and land management agency personnel also participate. Conferences, held twice a year, include skill development workshops and the opportunity to network with others in the profession. Other workshops and outings are also offered. Institute for Earth Education (IEE). IEE is an international network of earth educators which designs and disseminates complete educational programs that change people’s view of and interaction with the earth. An Earth Education Sourcebook and a number of publications and curriculum materials are also available. Earth Education: A New Beginning (1990) presents extensive criteria for developing and implementing earth education programs to help students learn to live lightly on the earth. California Outdoor School Administrators (COSA). COSA is a state sponsored organization of administrators of public residential outdoor schools which coordinates activities throughout the state and evaluates public outdoor education programs. Contact: Celeste Royer, 805-543-7732.
California Department of Education Office of Environmental Education. CDE coordinates curriculum, materials, and the environmental education grant program for California.
